Youth Short Term Assessment and Response (Y Star) - Youth Substance Use Program

Provides trauma-informed and culturally safe support, and connection to other community-based services for youth in crisis who are presenting with primary substance use concerns (with and without co-occurring mental health concerns).
Y-STAR teams work to improve the mental health and social functioning of youth by supporting substance use treatment, distributing harm reduction resources, and providing navigation access to other resources and care for youth and their families/caregivers across Vancouver Island. Each team Y-STAR team is unique to the community served and is based on identified local needs. Teams can include Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) crisis nurses, social workers, counsellors, clinicians, and youth/family support workers.

How to Access Y-STAR
  • Youth aged 12-24 years old
  • Youth must reside in the Island Health region
  • A referral is required, and is accepted when any of the following contact Y-STAR directly: emergency departments, clinicians with Island Health’s Child, Youth & Family MHSU Services, pediatricians, and family physicians or nurse practitioners (physicians see below for more information)
  • The team responds to youth with significant substance use concerns, who may or may not have co-occurring mental health concerns. This is done in community locales such as schools, homes, parks, and street-based settings, or if the youth is in an emergency department / after they are discharged.
