Prenatal & Early Years Program - Vancouver Coastal Health

Provided by Vancouver Coastal Health

Phone call and home visits for new mothers.
The Prenatal & Early Years Program provides nursing services to answer questions about birthing parent, baby, or family health and provides access to Public Health services.

Mothers who give birth in a hospital will receive a phone call from a public health nurse within 24-48 hours after discharge from hospital. Birthing parents who receive care from a midwife will receive care in the first few days from their midwife and will be contacted by a Public Health Nurse within six to eight weeks. Patients referred through this process will be contacted by a Public Health Nurse (PHN) who may provide direct nursing services or refer on to appropriate community resources. We ask that you have a discussion with the client or parent/guardian prior to making a referral.

In the Prenatal & Early Years Program, Public Health Nurses provide nursing services to answer questions about birthing parent, baby, or family health and provide access to public health services including:

  • prenatal support
  • after birth care of a new baby
  • child health clinics (immunization)
  • breastfeeding support
  • telephone support and advice
  • capacity building
  • parenting support
  • screening and referral to developmental screening

  • Public Health nurses are available to help before and after the birth of your baby. Contact your local public health nurse to learn more or call 1-855-550-2229 to talk to a public health nurse.
